What is an SR-22?
An SR-22 is a proof-of-insurance filing required in certain circumstances by a state agency. It is not a separate type of coverage. Ask the agency exactly what filing and duration it requires, then confirm that an insurer can make that filing for you.
Start with your actual notice
Read the agency’s notice before buying a policy described as “SR-22 insurance.” It should tell you what obligation you need to satisfy. The Washington Insurance Commissioner explains that a state licensing agency may require ongoing evidence of liability insurance and that not all insurers file SR-22 forms. That is Washington guidance, not a universal timeline.
Ask two separate questions
First: does this policy provide the insurance you need for your driving and vehicles? Second: will this insurer submit the exact filing the agency requires? Ask when it will be sent, whether there is a filing charge, and how you will receive confirmation. A normal insurance card should not be assumed to satisfy a specific filing order.
Do not guess the end date
Requirements depend on the state and the reason for the order. Get the release date or release procedure from the agency. Before switching insurers, ask how to maintain the required evidence without a gap. Keep the replacement filing confirmation with your policy records instead of relying on a verbal estimate.
If you do not own a car
Explain your situation to a licensed insurer and the agency; ask what policy and filing can satisfy your specific order. Do not assume a non-owner policy covers a household vehicle you regularly drive. The California DMV insurance requirements page provides a separate state example of acceptable evidence. Buying insurance alone does not confirm that suspended driving privileges have been restored.
