Tip in Costs & savings

Compare quotes on the same page

Compare written quotes using the same drivers, vehicles, coverage limits and deductibles. Check the policy period and total cost, including payment fees. A lower monthly payment can reflect different protection or a different payment schedule. List the drivers, vehicles, use, limits and deductibles you want quoted.

Make one reusable quote brief

List the drivers, vehicles, use, limits and deductibles you want quoted. Send the same information each time. The Texas Department of Insurance shopping guide recommends like-for-like comparisons and checking the company’s license and complaint record. Keep a copy of the information you supplied so you can resolve discrepancies.

Mark differences before judging price

Create columns for total policy premium, policy dates, liability limits, comprehensive deductible, collision deductible and any optional coverages. Add a row for fees and exclusions. A blank answer is a question to resolve, not a zero. If one quote differs, request a corrected version before deciding that it saves money.

Check the policy before you switch

A quote is not the same as confirmed coverage. Check the insurer’s final documents and effective time, then coordinate cancellation of the old policy. The Insurance Information Institute overview explains the policy contract and its coverage period. Save both confirmations and check any refund separately. Avoid a gap while paperwork is being finalized.
