Tip in Coverage & claims
Read your auto policy declarations
Use the declarations page as an index to the policy, then check the wording behind each entry. Confirm the insured drivers, vehicles, dates, coverages, limits and deductibles. Record anything that differs from your application or quote and ask the insurer for a written correction before relying on it.
Identify the contract
Put the declarations beside your application and accepted quote. Compare the names, vehicle identification numbers and policy number before examining prices. A document for a different vehicle or policy period is not a useful comparison. Keep the complete policy and endorsements with the summary so you can locate the conditions behind each entry.
Trace each coverage
Make a short table with columns for coverage, limit, deductible and the relevant policy section. Mark an empty or unclear entry as a question to resolve. The NAIC and Insurance Information Institute explain that auto insurance contains different protections; one figure does not describe every loss. Do not treat a quote as the final contract.
Resolve differences
Ask the insurer to explain an unfamiliar code or abbreviation in plain language. If you requested a change, obtain the revised documents and compare them again. Save the date, contact details and written response. Keep earlier versions separately so you can tell which document applies to a particular period. This checklist organizes questions; it does not establish that a claim is covered.
A record you can revisit
Keep the original document, the date you checked it and the question you asked together. Distinguish the provider’s written answer from your own interpretation. If a term is still unclear, leave it marked as unresolved rather than filling the gap with an assumption. Recheck the relevant documents before acting on an old note.
